A Window: An Enigma (Di Muka Jendela: Enigma ) exhibits Goenawan Mohamad’s works for the past two years. We shall delight in a variety of works consisting of dozens of paintings, hundreds of sketches, and tridimensional installations. This exhibition also celebrates Goenawan Mohamad’s 80th anniversary on 29 July 2021.

Goenawan Mohamad, better known as writer and public intellectual, was actually very close to the art world in the early 1960s, during which he lived with the artists of Sanggar Bambu, especially in Jakarta, and studied painting from Danarto, Syahwil, Mulyadi W.

As curator S. Malela Mahargasarie said in this exhibition, Goenawan Mohamad doubled as the magazine Tempo’s editor-in-chief and artistic director in the 1970s, several years after it was founded. He co-designed the cover, with its own distinct visual flavor at that time. During this period, he became close to Rusli and Nashar, two of Indonesia’s important painters.

In the last five years, Goenawan Mohamad has been exhibiting his artworks to the public. He began with his first sketch exhibition titled “PE.TIK.AN” at Pelataran Djoko Pekik, Bantul, Yogyakarta (November 2016), followed by the solo “Kata, Gambar” at dia.lo.gue artspace, Jakarta (February 2017), “Another Stage” at Aksara Pacific Place (July 2017), and “Ke Tengah” at Galeri Sarang (November 2017).

He collaborated with the artist Hanafi in the exhibition “57 x 76” at the National Gallery of Indonesia (June 2018). He also exhibited at Store Faber Castell Plaza Senayan, Jakarta (May 2018), and Hotel Monopoli (August 2018). Next, he toured the OHD Museum in Magelang (January 2019), Galeri Semarang (June 2019), and MDTL in Yogyakarta (November 2019).
